Kenmore garbage disposal fix

Disclaimer: The advice provided here is given without any promise and without assuming any liability. To avoid personal injury, please first disconnect power to your Garbage disposal.

Kenmore Garbage Disposer 6011 1/2 HP

Problem:  When you turn on the Kenmore 6011 1/2 HP garbage disposer, you hear the motor hum (and after a while the GD shuts off).

Solution

  • If you still hear the motor hum, turn the disposer off right away.
  • Look under under the sink and locate the bottom part of the garbage disposer.

  • Most garbage disposer comes with a wrench or hex key to help with unjamming.

  • Insert the wrench into a port on the bottom, center of the disposer.

  • Turn the wrench clock-wise and then counter-clockwise to wiggle the masher plate inside the disposer. This may dislodge the object that is causing the jam.

  • Now remove the wrench, connect power to the GD and turn it on.
  • If the GD doesn't run, you may have to reset the overload button. Turn the power off again. At the bottom of Kenmore GD, there's a small red button, press it in (assuming overload has caused the button to pop-out).
